Wal-Mart says Helen Robson Walton, widow
of the company's founder Sam Walton, has died at her home. The
company said in a news release that Helen Walton died Thursday
evening at the age of 87.
The news release said that she was
surrounded by family members when she died of natural causes.
Her eldest son Rob, chairman of Wal-Mart
Stores Incorporated, said he and his brother and sister were
proud of their mother and the life she led. He said she devoted
much of her life to helping others, and to improving the quality
of life in Northwest Arkansas.
Walton was born December 3, 1919, in
Claremore, Oklahoma, a daughter of L.S. and Hazel Carr Robson.
Walton's husband Sam, a native of Kingfisher, Oklahoma, died in
1992 at the age of 74.
A memorial service for Helen Walton is
planned for 1:30 p.m. Monday at First Presbyterian Church in
Bentonville.

Helen was the valedictorian of her high school class in
Claremore, Oklahoma and a graduate of the University of Oklahoma
at Norman with a degree in business. She was the daughter of
L.S. Robson, a prosperous banker and rancher. She and Sam were
married February 14, 1943.
Sam Walton (d. 1992) left his ownership in Wal-Mart to his
wife and their 4 children: S. Robson Walton (Rob), John T.
Walton (d. 2005), Jim Walton, and Alice Walton. Rob Walton
chairs the board of directors of Wal-Mart, on which John served
until his death.

Samuel Moore Walton, Wal-Mart Stores' founder. Born in 1918
in the dusty community of Kingfisher, Okla., he had accumulated
the biggest family fortune in America by the time he died in
1992.
