Glenn A. Zimmerman, age 91, recent Shelby, Ohio resident, died Wednesday, April 25, 2007 in Shelby at the home of his son, Mark Zimmerman. Born June 26, 1915 in Forest, Ohio to Orrie and Nellie Mae (Jenkins) Zimmerman, he had been a Fairlawn, Ohio resident for many years. A 1933 graduate of Forest High School, he continued his education at Ohio Northern University, receiving his Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering in 1937. He became a licensed professional civil engineer, and during WW II, he engineered the construction of the Revenna Arsenal. He was employed at B.F. Goodrich Co. in Akron where he co-founded the Aerospace Division, working extensively with the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo projects.
Following his retirement, he worked for the City of Fairlawn and later moved to New Bern, NC. Glenn was an avid Ohio State fan who enjoyed boating, fishing, hunting and model railroading.
Survivors include two sons, Eric (Judy) Zimmerman of Centerville, OH and Mark (Jone) Zimmerman of Shelby, OH; one daughter, Phebe (Jim) Kallstrom of Oklahoma City, OK; three grandchildren, Steven and Susan Zimmerman and Adam Kallstrom; nieces, nephews and other relatives.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Nancy (Johnston) Zimmerman in 2004; and two sisters, Pauline Fortney and Helen Karcher. A private family service will be held at a later date. At Mr. Zimmerman's request, calling hours will not be observed. Memorial expressions may be made to Hospice of North Central Ohio, 1050 Dauch Dr., Ashland, Ohio 44805. Barkdull Funeral Home, Shelby, Ohio is assisting the family with arrangements.
