George LeRoy Warner
George LeRoy Warner died December 28, 2007 in Norman after an
extended illness. George was born to George Edward and Nellie May
Warner on July 28, 1922 in McClain County. George grew up in Norman
during the depression and prior to World War II.
As a boy he delivered prescriptions and groceries for stores near
the campus and rented bicycles to college students. He was adept at
riding unicycles and rode them in Norman parades performing tricks
and wearing signs for different establishments. He met his wife of
65 years, Mary Charlotte Ezzell, while delivering milk for Baker's
Dairy located on West Main. They were married on April 3, 1942 and
lived on Kansas Street in Norman. During World War II he worked as
an aircraft mechanic at Tinker Field. After a short time in
California, he returned to Tinker AFB and resided in Midwest City.
He retired with over 30 years of service in 1978. During his early
retirement years he worked as a home renovation contractor, built a
personal retirement cabin, and renovated his residence in Midwest
City. After two episodes of cancer, he and Mary Charlotte moved to
Spanish Cove in Yukon. When his son and daughter-in-law moved to
Norman, George and his wife returned to Norman, the city of their
first home together.
George was active in the Boy Scouts of America, YMCA youth baseball,
Wickline United Methodist Church in Midwest City, the Masons and the
Jesus House. At Wickline United Methodist Church he served on the
Board of Trustees for many years leading numerous renovation
projects. He was a pack master for the Cub Scouts and a troop leader
for the Explorer Scouts. He did renovation projects at the Jesus
House and installed emergency communication systems for the elderly.
He enjoyed carpentry, wood crafting, and gospel music.
George Warner was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters Ruth
Adeline Shelton and Ruby Dean Payton and his brothers
Charles
Stanton Warner and Robert Arther Warner . He is survived by his
wife, Mary Charlotte Warner ; his son and daughter-in-law, Col.
George Robert (Bob) and Carol Warner ; his two granddaughters,
Carrie and husband Capt. Randy Gardner, and Maj. Kristin Warner ,
MD; and three great-grandchildren, Cassidy, Bailey, and Avery
Gardner.
A memorial service will be held Monday, January 7, 2008 at 1:30 p.m.
at McFarlin Memorial United Methodist Church. Services are under the
direction of Havenbrook Funeral Home of Norman, Oklahoma. His
remains will be interned at
Arlington Memory Gardens in Midwest
City. Memorial contributions may be made to the McFarlin Memorial
