Marjorie L. Ames, longtime Newkirk resident, died early Sunday morning, June 2, 2002, in Deaconess Hospital, Oklahoma City. She was 81.
The daughter of William W. and Joanna Cauthron Stevenson, she was born Sept. 22, 1920, in Vandervoort, AR. She grew up and received her education in Vandervoort where she played on the girls basketball team and graduated from high school.
On April 29, 1929, Marjorie and William Howard Ames were married in Mena, AR. They established their first home in Vandervoort, later moving to Kansas and Oklahoma where he worked in construction. After their daughter Gloria's birth and a brief stay in North Carolina where Howard was stationed with the US Army, Marjorie returned to Vandervoort while her husband served overseas during WWII. After his discharge in 1946 they moved to Newkirk where she has since resided. Mr. Ames died Oct. 31, 1999.
She is survived by her daughter, Gloria Stanley of Oklahoma City; her granddaughters, Sabrina Staires of Kansas City, MO, Stacey Maness of Oklahoma City and Shelley Armstrong of Los Angeles, CA; her great-grandchildren, Kastan and Tyler Maness of Oklahoma City and Madison Staires of Kansas City, MO. Marjorie will be sorely missed, particularly by her three great-grandchildren who had the pleasure to know her and kept her going after her husband's death.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers and six sisters.
The funeral was held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, June 8 in Miller-Stahl Funeral Chapel with Jim Glover of Oklahoma City officiating. Burial followed in Newkirk Cemetery under the direction of Miller-Stahl Funeral Service.
Those serving as casket bearers were Ted Livin, Jeff Livin, Robert Stevenson, Wayne Leven, Jerry Ryan, Gary Ryan and Bill Ryan.
Memorial funds have been established with the National Organization for Women and Hospice of Ponca City. Contributions may be made to either through Eastman National Bank, Box 468, Newkirk, OK 74647-0468.
