William I. "Billy" Atkinson, 71, of 1711 W Wilshire Blvd, an independent oilman and geologist, died Thursday at Baptist Medical Center. Services Will be at 9:30 am, Saturday at First Baptist Church with burial in Rose Hill Cemetery  directed by Hahn-Cook, Street & Draper Funeral Home,
Atkinson, who was involved in the discovery of oil pools in west Edmond zzzzz and in south Paline in Stephens County, was born in Hoxbar and came to Oklahoma City in 1927. He was a founding member of the Oklahoma City Petroleum Club and vas a member and past president of the Oklahoma City Geological Society. Ile was a member of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists, Independent Petroleum Association of America and Oklahoma City Chamber of Commerce.

He was a member of the Oklahoma City Colt and Country Club, Beacon Club, Men's Dinner Club, Knights Templar and the McAlester Consistory, He was a 32nd Degree Mason, a Shriner and a Jester.

He was past chairman of the board of deacons and past finance committee chairman at First Baptist Church, where he was a 50-year member and long-time deacon, he received his bachelor's degree from the University of Oklahoma.


Survivors include his wife, Mattie; a son, Walter, 3000 NW 41, and a daughter, Mrs. Jane Baucum, Texas City, Tex. Friends may call at the funeral home from noon to 9 pm Friday.
