JOSEPHINE IONE KELLY

JOSEPHINE IONE KELLY was born March 27, 1890 in Carl Junction, Jasper County, Missouri, and died April 09, 1963 in Miami, Ottawa County, Oklahoma.  She married HARRY RUSSELL DOAN June 24, 1916 in Miami, Ottawa County, Oklahoma, son of ARTHUR DOAN and MINERVA DAVIS.  He was born September 08, 1887 in Bellsville, Ohio, and died December 25, 1951 in Miami, Ottawa County, Oklahoma.

Josephine Ione Kelly was the fourth child of Joseph Patrick and Eliza Jane (Bishop) Kelly, Jr.

She appears on the 1910 Federal Census in Baxter Springs, Cherokee County, Kansas (enumeration district 13, ward 3, page 19A), living with her parents.  That census shows 20 year-old Josephine was born in Missouri.

Josephine married Harry Russell Doan, son of Arthur and Minerva (Davis) Doan.  She appears with him on the 1920 Federal Census in Miami, Ottawa County, Oklahoma.  That census shows she was born in Missouri.

She was the only one of her sisters who learned to drive.

Although Harry Russell and Josephine Ione (Kelly) Doan had no children, they raised Josephine's nephew, Harry Floyd Junior Kelly, who was orphaned when his parents died in 1936 Baxter Springs, Cherokee County, Kansas.

Josephine took a special liking to her grand-niece, Doris Jean Kelly, going to the movies with her every time it changed at the movie theaters in Miami, Oklahoma.  " Poor thing, she sat through every Roy Rogers and Gene Autry movie that came out, " Doris remembered in 2005.  Josephine had a good sense of humor, was a good cook and went along on band trips with her grand-niece.

Josephine Ione (Kelly) Doan's obituary appeared in the April 10,1963 edition of the Miami News Record.  She is buried in the Grand Army of the Republic Cemetery (GAR) in Miami, Ottawa County, Oklahoma.

 HARRY RUSSELL DOAN:

Harry Russel Doan, son of Arthur and Minerva (Davis) Doan, appears on the 1910 Federal Census in Liberty, Guernsey County, Ohio.  That census shows 22 year-old Harry was a widowed telegraph opertor, born in Ohio.  He reported that his parents were also born in Ohio.

He married Josephine Ione Kelly, daughter of Joseph Patrick and Eliza Jane (Bishop) Kelly.

Harry appears on the 1920 Federal Census in Miami, Ottawa County, Oklahoma, giving his age as 32 and occupation as manager of a drugstore.  That census shows that he and his parents were born in Ohio.

Harry Russel Doan operated a paint store in Miami, Oklahoma in the 1920's.  He took over ownership of Doan's Pharmacy, which had been started around 1908 by his uncle, Dr. E. R. Doan.  At the time he assumed control of the pharmacy in 1915, it was located on A Street SE and was later moved to 5 South Main Street.  The pharmacy was sold in 1950 to Harry T. Doan, who later moved it to a spot near Miami Baptist Hospital.

Harry Russel Doan retired in 1950.  He was a 32nd Degree Mason and belonged to the Woodsfield, Monroe County, Ohio, Methodist Church.

He was a very kind, quiet man, who loved listening to baseball on the radio.  He wore an old straw hat and suspenders when he worked out in the yard, which he loved to do.  He loved cigars.  "My dad used to steal his cigars when he was a teenager," Doris Jean (Kelly) Potts wrote in 2005, "and one time he took one and grandpa (Harry Doan) had doctored it up and dad got so sick, he never took another one.  Grandpa never said a word, he didn't have to".

He is buried in the Grand Army of the Republic Cemetery (GAR) in Miami, Ottawa County, Oklahoma.
