BAKER, FARMER, GREEN
of Karen Hogue McClaran Digger

Gardner served in the Civil War for the Confederacy {16th Tennessee Volunteer Infantry, C.S.A. Pension #119, began in Company C, but it was changed to Company K.}.
He was a farmer by trade, before and after the war. He was injured and lost his right leg at the Battle of Chicamauga, which was fought in the extreme northwestern area of Georgia, just south of Chattanooga, Tennessee, during General William T. Sherman's march to Atlanta. Gardner came home to Sparta to live with his parents and siblings until he married a woman named Belle BAKER/FARMER from the same area.

Gardner and Belle (BAKER/FARMER) GREEN came to the Ada area in Pontotoc County, OK (I.T.) between 1900-1903 and had just as difficult life there as in Tennessee. The grandchildren recall stories told to them by their parents of Belle trying to find work to feed the children after Gardner died, but eventually died herself. The children grew up in other homes, one of which was the SAYLORs from Sparta, TN., and did not have the opportunity to know each other. Gardner and Belle are said to be buried in the Rosedale Cemetery, however, there are no records confirming this.
His son is listed as being buried there, as are other relatives, but not Belle and Gardner.
