YANKEE FRONT, PLEASANT HILL, HAMMON Dist. No 66

SE1/4 of 1-13-21

November 3, 1904 Cheyenne Star states, “At the box supper at the Yankee Front School house near Larned on Friday evening last, a large crowd was in attendance and a most enjoyable time had by all present. In the cake contest for the most popular young lady, Miss May Hiatt and Miss Mamie Turner were the principal contestants and Miss Hiatt won by a small margin. This contest brought in $30.10. Miss Hiatt’s box brought the highest price of $2.20 and was bought by Lee Morton. Steve Presmier received the prize for being the ugliest gentleman present. The music and singing was under the management of Prof. J.M. Wright and was enjoyed by all.”

In 1908, when the county was divided into school districts, the schoolhouse known as Pleasant Hill was about one mile west and one-half mile south of the new site of Hammon. It was called District No. 66. After a great deal of dissention in the community over the name of the school, it was changed to Yankee Front, but later was known as Pleasant Hill and back to Yankee Front. It was told that the school board elections determined the name of the school.

The following is a summary of the naming of Yankee Front School as told by Sollie Hiatt to Glena Belle Crane. “There were people in the community who preferred the name of Pleasant Hill for the school while others who came to Oklahoma from the ‘north’ wanted it called Yankee Front. To climax the upheaval over the naming of the school, someone slipped up to the school one night and painted it a bright red. From that time it was known as Yankee Front.”

A few names of the families in the early days were the Collins, Hison Fesmires, T.A. Cox family, Grant and Sherman Hiatt families, Kirk McFarlands, Pete Mortons, Baggetts and J.F. Creachs.

Sometime before 1916, the Yankee Front School was closed and merged into the Hammon School System.

HAMMON

Location SE1/4 of Section 1-13-21

The first school building erected in Hammon was finished in 1912 or 1913. It was known as the Moss Building and was named for the first superintendent of schools, Professor Moss.  After the 1942 school year, Hammon was placed in Custer County and records were transferred there.  Sometime after the 1980’s, Hammon was returned to Roger Mills County.
