Texhoma cemetery lies exactly on the line dividing Oklahoma from Texas. Its post office is in Oklahoma; its cemetery in Texas. Currently the only cemetery for about ten miles it lies on the high plains of the Oklahoma panhandle and competes with jackrabbits, rattlesnakes and wind, but is excellently maintained. The cemetery is administered by Dawson-Welch Funeral Home. As of January 2000, there were about 1800 people buried there. Records have been kept since 1921, though earlier burials took place. Some grave sites, such as John Woods' and Charles Short's were moved here from another cemetery. Since the population is basically fundamental in their beliefs, the graves are fairly simple with usually just the name and years of the deceased on the tombstone.
Beginning from Texhoma at the junction of U.S. Highway 54 and State Highway 95, travel south on SH 95 about one and one-half miles. The road will curve and you will see the cemetery on the right. The grave sites are laid out in 412 blocks of four lots with two graves on each lot, making eight burial spaces per block. In the following listing, the block number appears first, then the lot number, then the actual space ie. Lily Dale Airhart is buried in block #63, lot #3, space #6. Occasionally families bought entire blocks. Often they bought adjoing lots.
In the following listing, the name of the buried appears in the first column, the date of death in the second column, the purchaser of the space in the third column and the location in the fourth column. The spelling of the names is exactly as it is in a plat book kept by Dawson-Welch, unless it is known by the reasearcher to be different. The comments as to age or other identification were also retained from the plat book. The researcher has added a few maiden names when they were known.
If you visit Texhoma Cemetery, a map is kept near the entrance to help you find the exact location of a grave site. The researcher would appreciate any additions of corrections to information given here. Please contact Claudette.
