The region known today as, Oklahoma, was home to Native American tribes when Coronado, the first European, who arrived in the area in 1541.  Oklahoma was part of the Louisiana Purchase and in 1803, Oklahoma was established as Indian Territory.  As Indian Territory it was given territorial government.  After the forced removal of Indians from the Eastern United States between 1828 to 1846, Oklahoma became home to the Five Civilized Tribes, which are:  Cherokee, Choctaw, Chickasaw, Creek and Seminole.
Comanche, Osage and other Plains Indians also called this land home.  Oklahoma was opened for homesteading by runs and lottery, the first run was on April 22, 1889.  The most famous run was to the Cherokee Outlet in 1893.
