FIRST BARTLESVILLE BOY FELL AT VERDUN FIGHTING WITH BRITISH

Howard Mitchem Killed in Action On Battle Front April 15, 1915

While the men from Bartlesville and Washington County are going to the
military camps and preparing themselves for the battle lines in Europe, it is
interesting to know that at least one Bartlesville lad has already laid down his
life on those lines in the cause of humanity.
Howard H. Mitchem, oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. O. O. Mitchem, 1000 Oak street,
this city, was killed in action at Verdun, April 15, 1915.
Young Mitchem was a member of the British army and had been serving in Egypt
when his parents last heard from him by letter. They were later advised by
the British war office of their son's death. He was buried near the battle
lines where he fell.

Note: Howard Hendricks Mitchem was the son of Orrin Ometa Mitchem and Ella
Adaline Hendricks. He attended school in Bartlesville.

MRS. PHILIP MCGOUGH DEAD
Death Follows Surgical Operation - Funeral Tomorrow at Catholic Church -
Interment Here
Mrs. Philip McGough died last evening at 7 o'clock at the family residence,
corner Third and Cherokee after an illiness of two days of congestion of the
stomach.
The death of Mrs. McGough was a great shock to her family and many friends.
she had stood the operation of the day before so well and rallied sufficiently
to justify the expectation that she would fully recover.
Early Sunday morning Mrs. McGough was stricken with a severe pain in the
stomach but soon was much better. Later she became much worse and a physician was
called. She gradually grew worse and an operation was decided to be
necessary. At six o'clock Monday evening the operation had been made and the patient
rallied and appeared to be getting along satisfactory, until the next day when
complications set in which left little hope of her recovery.
At her bedside was all of her nine children, four of them from out of town,
who had been summoned when death seemed probable. The funeral will be
conducted tomorrow forenoon at the Catholic church by Father John, and interment will
be made in this city.
Mr. and Mrs. McGough had been residents of Bartlesville almost three years,
coming from a farm near Parsons, where they had lived for thirty-five years.
She was a devoted Christian, and a loyal Catholic, a kind friend and neighbor
and devoted wife and mother. She is survived by her husband, four sons, H.
W. and Philip of this city, John, of Parsons and Hugh of Muskogee. Mrs. J. B.
Johnson and M. T. McCarty of Parsons and Misses Theresa and Anna and Mrs. E.
E. Early of this city.

NOTE: She was Sarah Jane Bowman McGough, born 10 Nov 1835 in Ohio and died
12 Feb 1907. She is buried at White Rose Cemetery, 11th and Virginia, Bartlesville, OK
