In 1900, the census listed the birth place of the parents as well as the individual. The age and relationship to the family was also given. The 1900 census in Cloud Chief had a white and Indian census. The Indian census gave the names of the family, birth place, age, tribe, and whether the Indian lived in a house or teepee. In many cases, the age is left blank, as the Indians did not know their age. The census also recorded whether the male had more than one wife. The 1900 census was taken in June before the August election to move the county seat to Cordell. The census reveals a number of businesses and professional people for the thriving town. The penmanship was not good, which made many names difficult to read. Census takers were not thorough and accurate in most cases. James Lay enumerated township no. 206 which was legible for the most part. William B. Philip enumerated township no. 207 and wrote reference numbers over all the surnames, making the names impossible to read; therefore, at least half of those living in the Cloud Chief area in 1900 are not listed in this publication.
