Henry DECOURTNEY aka Henry D. COURTNEY.
Henry was born in Morgan WV 1826, signed up and entered the army in 1845 in
Cleveland Ohio, and was assigned to Fort Kearney, Nebraska. He served in the army for 5
years, including service in the Mexican War were he claims that he fought in Mexico. After
discharged in 1850, he married Mary Ann WILLIAMS VREDENBURG at Fort Kearney.
Henry worked at several forts as an agent. He and Mary Ann raised a large family around Fort Arbuckle. Henry purchased land near where Mudd Creek and the Red River come together near where today is the town of Courtney, Love Co., OK. Henry ran a ferry across the Red River, raised hogs, cotton and probably many other things. Henry died in 1898 at his place in Courtney and is buried in an unmarked grave in that cemetery. Mary Ann died in 1911 in Davis.
Henry was shot in the temple while eating supper at his kitchen table. He survived and you can note probably muscle damage from this wound in this picture.
Many thanks and appreciation to Eula Mae MANNING ROGERS for this picture. Eula Mae and I are both descendants of Henry and Mary Ann.
