The United States declared war on Germany, and on 6 April 1917, officially entered World War I. Six weeks later the Selective Service Act was passed, authorizing the draft registration: every male living within the United States between the ages of eighteen and forty-five was required to register.

Between 1917 and 1918 in three separate registration periods, approximately 24 million men registered for the draft. Each of these separate registrations used a slightly different version of the card. Generally, the registration cards included the following information:

  • Full name
  • Residence
  • Date and place of birth
  • Age, race, and country of citizenship
  • Occupation and employer
  • Physical description (hair and eye color, height, disabilities)
  • Additional information such as address of nearest relative, dependent relatives, marital status, father’s birthplace, or previous exemption from service
  • Signature

Our transcription of the registrations which occurred in Cleveland County includes:

  • Full name
  • Residence
  • Birthdate
  • Birthplace

If information is missing from an individual, either the information was not given in the record or it was indecipherable by the transcriber, Todd Murray.
