Below you can find marriage announcements transcribed from historic Bryan County newspapers. Marriage announcements often include the names of the bride and groom's parents, the location of the marriage, and the marriage officiator.


1898, Ward Buell & Rose Durant

Sunday morning Mr. Ward Buell, of Atoka, and Miss Rosa Durant of our city were united in the holy bonds of wedlock by Rev. J. H. Manis.

 

Miss Rosa is a charming Choctaw young lady and is the daughter of Uncle Dixon Durant.

 

Mr. Buell is one of the Atoka typo's [sic] being connected with the Citizen.

 

Both these you [sic] folks have a host of friends who the TIMES joins in extending them the best wishes.


1898, Fred Jennings & Mollie Kiser

In last week's issue of the Cale Enterprise, its editor tried to use some Durant news by witing up the marriage of Miss Mollie Kiser to Mr. Fred Jennings. He puts it "Mrs. Mollie Kiser," which makes it appear as though the lady was a widow, which is not the case. She was a young lady of just 21 years, and Mr. Jennings is her first husband.

1906, Lannie Mead & Bessie Shelton
MEAD-SHELTON WEDDING

Mr. Lannie Mead and Miss Bessie Shelton were united in marriage Wednesday afternoon at the residence of the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. T. Shelton, two miles east of Sterrett, by the Rev. J. B. Bush. The contracting parties are very prominently known in this section. After the ceremony and congratulations were over dinner was announced and the many friends wended their ways homeward. Mr. and Mrs. Mead will be at home to their many friends after holidays near Paucanla.

1916, Walter Garrett & Florence Coburn

Tuesday evening at the home of the brides parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. Coburn, Mr. Walter Garrett and Miss Florence Coburn, Judge Ellis officiating. The happy young people have the well wishes of the entire community in their new adventure.


1917, Earl Johnson & Erma Franklin

On December 24th Miss Erma Franklin of Colbert and Mr. Earl Johnson of Durant were united in marriage at the Presbyteoian [sic] parsonage in Durant. The Times with their many other friends wishes them well.


1918, Jesse Nelms & Ora Smith

Mr. Jesse Nelms and Miss Ora Smith were quitely [sic] married Sunday morning at 11 o'clock, December 23, at the home of the brides [sic] parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Smith, four miles south of Calera, Rev. J. T. Clinton officiating. Both the bride and groom are well known and popular in the part of the county, and with their frinds the editor joins in hearty congratulations.


1919, G. W. Dyer & Martha Perryman

Married, Sunday December 7, 1919, at the residence of Rev. J. E. Dagley, Mr. G. W. Dyer and Miss Martha Perryman, both from the vicinity of Allison. The groom is a son of Harrison Dyer, a well-know and prosperous citizen of this section, and the bride is a charming young lady who has more recently moved to the county. The Press, with other friends, extends congratulations and well wishes.


1919, Jesse Willis & Essie Rico

Married this morning by Justice of the Peace J. H. Downing, Mr. Jesse Willis, and Miss Essie Rico, both of Caddo.


1929, Lance Cain & Wilma Bell
Cain-Bell

Mr. Lance Cain and Miss Wilma Bell were married in Ardmore last December 1st. The newe [sic] was not revealed until this week. Mr. [sic] Cain is the daughter of Bob Bell, and was well known in Caddo, having spent her early life here.


1952, J. T. DaVault & Clinille Harrison
Clinille Harrison and J. T. DaVault Exchange Vows

Miss Clinille Harrison and J. T. DaVault of Durant, Route Two, exchanged wedding vows Friday morning July 25 at 11 o'clock in Texarkana, Arkansas.

 

Mr. and Mrs. Clayton Rackley of Denison, Texas were the couple's only attendants.

 

For her wedding the bride chose a suit of orchid gabardine, with matching accessories and a corsage of white carnations.

 

The bride is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. T. J. Harrison of Durant, Route 2. Both the bride and bridegroom are graduates of Cobb High School. Mr. DaVault is the son of Mr. Gordon Davault of Cobb.

 

Dinner Honors Couple

Mr. and Mrs. DaVault were honored at a dinner Sunday, July 2y in the home of Mr. and Mrs. T. J. Harrison. Those present in addition to the honorees were Mr. Fuzz DaVault, Henry Harrison and family, Betty Harlin, A. L. Bowen, Mr. and Mrs. C. D. Parrish of San Diego, California and Mr. and Mrs. Harrison.


1952, John L. Busby & Robbie Trimmer
Candlelight Wedding Ceremony Unites Miss Robbie Trimmer and John L. Busby

In a candlelight ceremony performed Friday evening, November 21, at 7 o'clock, Miss Robbie Trimmer became the bride of John L. Busby. The Reverend Marvin Hamm of Coffeyville, Kansas, read the double ring vows in the Pentecostal Holiness church before an altar flanked by seven branched candelabra and Cathedral baskets of white gladioli.

 

The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. L.J. Trimmer, 414 South 2nd. Mr. and Mrs. T.B. Busby, Route Two, Caddo, are parent of the bridegroom.

 

Appropriate nuptial music and the traditional wedding march were played by Miss Shirley Ferguson, pianist, who also accompanied Miss Maxine Webb, soloist, who sand "I Love You Truly" and "Because".

 

The bride, given in marriage by her father, wore a pink and black poodle cloth suit with black accesories. Her veil was attached to a white halo caught at either side by a cluster of satin ribbon. She carried a white prayer book topped with an orchid showered with satin streamers. Her only jewelry wwas a rhinestone necklace, a gift of the bridegroom.

 

The bride's only attendant, Miss Mary Nell Robnson, wore and orchid two-piece dress with black velvet accessories. The long-waisted fitted bodice was styled with a peter pan collar and three-quarter length sleeves. At her shoulder was a corsage of white carnations.

 

G. L. Russell of Durant served as best man.

 

For her daughter's wedding Mrs. Trimmer chose a navy blue suit with matching accessories and a corsage of white carnations.

 

Immediately following the ceremony a reception was held in the home of the bride's parents. The table was laid with a white linen cloth and centered with the pink and white two-tiered wedding cake. Miss Robinson served the cake and Mrs. Dude Robinson presided at the punch bowl. Mrs. G.L. Russell kept the guest book.

 

Following a wedding trip to points in Texas and Oklahoma, Mr. and Mrs. Busby are now at home at 612 West 3rd, Fort Worth, Texas.

 

Out-of-town guests attending the wedding were Rev. and Mrs. Hamm of Coffeyville, Kansas; Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Beckham and children of Sherman, Texas.


1952, Bill McFatridge & Wilma Freeman
Wilma Freeman Becomes Bride Of Bill McFatridge

In a candlelight double-ring ceremony performed in the First Baptist church November 25 Miss Wilma Faye Freeman became the bride of Bill McFatridge. The Reverend L. L. Armstrong, pastor, read the vows.

 

The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Freeman of Healdton. Mr. and Mrs. Carl McFatridge of Durant are parents of the bridegroom.

 

The vows were read before an altar decorated with white nums and six-branched candelabra.

 

Miss Twyla Lennon, organist, presented a prelude of soft music and accompanied Cloyce Powell, soloist, who sand "Because" and "The Lord's Prayer".

 

Given in marriage by her father the bride was lovely in a a white velvet ballerina length dress. She carried a cascade bouquet of three dozen yellow roses.

 

Miss Helen Freeman of Healdton, sister of the bride, was maid of honor. Her dress was gold vevet and she carried a bouquet of bronze mums.

 

Miss Veda Kay Kerr of Madill was flower girl. Bridesmaids were Miss Shirley Dawson of Healdton, Miss Doylene Brown of Zaneis, Oklahoma and Miss Jean Cordell of Hugo. Their dresses were gold velvet and styled indentically to that of the bride. They carried bouquets of mums.

 

Miss Vi Thomason of Ardmore and Miss Laverne Clary of Talihina were candlelighters.

 

Serving the bridegroom as best man was Ronnie Shook of Durant. Ushers were Phil Holmes, Don Rice and Eddie Wyatt.

 

For her daughter's wedding Mrs. Freeman chose a navy blue nylon suit with pink accessories. Her corsage was an orchid. Mr. McFatridge, mother of the bridegroom was dressed in a light brown faile suit with matching accessories. Her corsage was an orchid.

 

Immediately following the ceremony a reception was held in Fellowship Hall of the church. Miss Martha McFatridge, sister of the bridegroom, presided at the guest book. Miss Vivian Downs, Miss Maxine Webb and Mrs. B. A. Vineyard served the guests.

 

Following the reception the couple left for a short wedding trip to Dallas, Texas. For travelling the bride chose a gold velveteen suit with black accessoriieis [sic]. At her shoulder was an orchid corsage.

 

After the Thanksgiving holidays, the couple will reside at 783 Veterans Village and will continue their studies at Southeastern State college.
