Woods county, OK map

Woods County is located in northwestern Oklahoma, created at statehood from a portion of Woods County, Oklahoma Territory.
The county took its name for Samuel Newitt Wood, Kansas political leader.
Alva is the county seat for Woods Co. A post office was established August 25, 1893.  It was named for Alva Adams, railroad attorney, who later was governor of the state  of Colorado.

Key Milestones in Woods County Oklahoma Formation

• Cherokee Outlet Origin: The land that makes up Woods County was originally part of the Cherokee Outlet, which was acquired by the U.S. government from the Cherokee Nation in the late 1800s.
• M County Designation: Prior to the historic September 16, 1893 Cherokee Outlet land opening, the Secretary of the Interior divided the acquired territories into provisional counties, naming this area M County with Alva designated as the county seat.
• Renaming to Woods County: On November 6, 1894, voters changed the county's name to honor Samuel Newitt Wood (a Kansas Populist leader). Although the name was proposed as "Wood," it was misspelled as "Woods" on the ballot and kept with the "s" by the election committee for "euphony sake".
• 1906–1907 Statehood Adjustments: During the 1906 Oklahoma Constitutional Convention ahead of statehood, large portions of southern and eastern Woods County were carved out to create Major County and Alfalfa County, shaping its modern borders.
