Charley F. (Buzz) Bartlett, 89, Sapulpa, died Saturday at Bartlett Memorial Medical Center. Services will be 10 am Tuesday at the sanctuary of First Presbyterian Church, Sapulpa, with the Rev. Thomas Eggebeen officiating. Burial will be in South Heights Cemetery under the direction of Smith Funeral Home. The son of Harry W. and Maud Bartlett, he was born Nov 28, 1897, on the Bartlett farm north of Mannford, Indian Territory. He attended Mannford grade school. As a student at Sapulpa High School, he was a star quarterback and halfback on the Chieftain football teams from 1915-1917. Mr. Bartlett continued his education at Kemper Military Academy, Oklahoma Epwirth University at Guthrie and finally at the University of Oklahoma. He played football at O.U. under veteran coach Bennie Owen. In 1918, following the OU-Kansas game he and some teammates entered the U.S. Army. During military service, he was stationed at Camp Zachery Taylor in Booneville, Ky. After World War I, he began cattle ranching in the Huerfano River area in Colorado. He married Genevieve Sexauer at Guthrie, Okla., on Dec 17, 1919. She preceded him in death. During a recession in the beef industry in 1924, he joined his father in the oil business in Creek County. He was a driller, truck driver, tool dresser and pusher. He joined his brother Edward Bartlett in the Bartlett Collins Glass industry in 1930. He served in the production and sales departments. Charley was vice president of the company until the death of his brother, Edward in 1979. He served as president until his retirement in 1981 after 51 years with the company. Buzz Bartlett donated generously to many charities including the Bartlett Memorial Medical Center. He and his brother, Dr. M. S. Bartlett, organized the Doc and Buzz foundation in 1964 for the purpose of presenting scholarships to deserving students at Oklahoma State University, Tulsa University and especially the University of Oklahoma. The foundation has also presented scholarship awards to outstanding football players. The most sentimental thrust of the foundations has been the support of O.U. mascots Boomer, Sooner and the Sooner Schooner. Survivors include daughter Mrs. Joe (Peggy) Sherwood of Sapulpa; brother Dr. M. S. Bartlett of Sapulpa; two grandsons and six great-grandchildren.
