KELLYVILLE PUPIL DIES AT SCHOOL
A Kellyville teenager collapsed and died Monday from a reported asthma attack.
Andre` D. HUGHES, 16, was transported to Bartlett Memorial Medical Center after he asked to be excused from class to get some fresh air and was later found unconscious.
Kellyville Middle School principal Jon SISSOM said HUGHES, who suffered from asthma, asked to be excused from band rehearsal to get a breath of fresh air. Shortly afterwards, HUGHES reportedly collapsed.
A student summoned help, and teachers administered CPR until ambulance crews arrived.
SISSOM said Kellyville Police and the Oklahoma Highway Patrol also responded to the scene.
Steve HOWARD, a supervisor with Creek County Ambulance, said ambulance crews administered medication, but HUGHES’ lungs and windpipe had shut down and there was little anyone could do. HUGHES reportedly had medication locked in his locker.
Kellyville Superintendent Dwight DAVIDSON said he felt the staff and faculty acted as effectively as possible.
"They recognized the gravity of the situation early," DAVIDSON said.
HUGHES, the son of Darnell and Donna HUGHES of Kellyville, was a sophomore at Kellyville High School. He was a member of the football team and the drum corps in the high school band. He was also on the Principal’s Honor Roll.
"He had an infectious smile," DAVIDSON SAID. "He was everyone’s friend."
Monday’s Kellyville Board of Education meeting was postponed because of the incident, and SISSOM said the students were shocked and grief-stricken.
"It’s hard to express what their reaction was," SISSOM said. "It was very emotional."
The school set up its Crisis Intervention Team, made up of the school’s three full time counselors, seven teachers with counseling training and area ministers to help students deal with the tragedy.
"They responded very quickly and very professionally," SISSOM SAID. Sapulpa Schools also sent its crisis team members, and SISSOM said the team will be at the school until the need is gone.
Services for HUGHES will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the high school.
