Updated: 06 Sep 2009 A. H. Stone Services Sunday Services were held Sunday for A. H. Stone, 74, veteran Maryville groceryman who died Friday following a critical illness of several days. He would have been 75 April 23. He had been in declining health for the past two or three years, suffering from hardening of the arteries, diabetes and an ulcer. For the past three months he had been a patient at Eastern State Hospital where he died of pneumonia and other compliances. He married Miss Annie Cupp, a native Blount Countian and they purchased the store which had been founded 10 years earlier by her father, W. L. Cupp. After working four years for Peoples Telephone Company, he quit to devote full time to the store. The present store at the corner of Sevierville Road and Everett High Road was built in 1935. For 31 years of his 46 years in business he sold Gulf gasoline, making him the oldest Gulf dealer in the county. A Mason, he belonged to New Providence Lodge No. 128 F&AM. He was a member of Maryville First Baptist Church. During World War II he served on the Blount County Board of the Office of Price Administration. He is survived by his wife; son Dean, Times managing editor and vice president; two daughters, Miss Margaret Stone, a dietitian at Baptist Hospital in Knoxville, and Mrs. T.
