I came to Indian Territory March 15, 1894 and settled near Paoli, Oklahoma
on a farm. We raised corn and cotton. When we went to Pauls Valley, Oklahoma
from Paoli we had to pass through a large gate and the Indians made you pay toll to pass
through.
There was quite a few Indians there but I don't know what tribe they were,
but they were not friendly.
There was no improvements a all, just wagon roads and a few houses.
In 1904 we went into the store business in Paoli, Oklahoma and did a very
good business. People were honest and strived to better themselves, but there wasn't
very much money.
I was at Paoli, Oklahoma when the Territory came into statehood. It
was a big celebration.
We stayed in the store business for 13 years. My husband retired in
1917. In 1920 my husband died and was buried in Paoli Cemetery, Paoli, Oklahoma.
I am the mother of six children. My oldest son saw service during
the World War and was honorably discharged and is now cashier of Paoli Bank and has held
that position for several years.
I now live at my home place in Paoli, Oklahoma.
