This school was located across from Whitebead Cemetery and in
it's day it attracted students
from far and near. It was at it's peak from 1885 to 1888 when it was the
only school of it's
kind in this section of Indian Territory. After 1880, due to the railroad
bypassing Whitebead,
the school decreased in size and influence, becoming just another country school
by 1890.
The building was then used for church services along with
being a country school until
it was damaged by a windstorm in 1904. The lumber was salvaged and used to
build
the Methodist Church
There were five teachers and Reverend Powell was the President.
The lower grades studied reading, writing, arithmetic, spelling, geography,
lower history,
and elementary English. The upper classes were on a level with secondary
colleges and
subjects included Greek, Latin, Hebrew, algebra, trigonometry, geometry, English
grammar,
composition, public speaking and various histories.
