Vern A. Simpson was born August 21st, 1902 in Brookville, Missouri. He was the son of Seymour Cyrus Simpson and Bertie M. (VanWy) Simpson. When he was 5 years old his family moved from Missouri to Guthrie, Oklahoma. Vern A. Simpson had 2 brothers, Wayne A. and Ernest Lee Simpson. Ernest Lee Simpson was killed in France during WWI.
Vern married Mildred Rachel Ward October 31st, 1927 in Guthrie. Mildred
was the daughter of Charles Calvin Ward and Mamie Ethyl Rathbun of Marshall and later they moved to Guthrie. Charles Calvin Ward rode with his family in the Cherokee Strip land rush. Mildred was born November 6, 1907 in Marshall, Oklahoma. She had 2 brothers and 2 sisters. Euclid Ward, Bernice Purviance, Juanita Phillips and Charles Ward.
Vern and Mildred traveled with the Sante Fe Railroad from 1927 through 1944 where Vern Simpson was employed on a steel bridge crew. During that time their two children were born. Ramona Lea (Simpson) Hadlock and Ernest Lyle Simpson. Ramona Lea (Simpson) Hadlock married Ed Hadlock of Oklahoma City and had 4 children, Robin, Jennifer, Christopher, and Douglas. Ernest Simpson married Sue Miller and had 4 children, Pam, Janet, Jeff and Jane.
When Vern retired from the Sante Fe Railroad, he and Mildred started a dairy and farmed 320 acres southeast of Guthrie. In 1966 they moved to Guthrie and lived on South Division. This is where they opened a dairy farm and sold milk. People came a great distance to buy raw milk from them. In 1968 they sold the farm and retired to a home on Allen Road in Guthrie. Vern worked part-time for his son Ernest Simpson who owned Simpson Oil Company. Vern died May 6th, 1975 and Mildred died June 16,
1984 in Guthrie. |
