HOLMES Helen Freudenberger passed away March 22, 1997. Born December 16, 1915 in Pleasant Valley, Oklahoma, to John Andrew and Theresia Karner Freudenberger, the eighth and youngest child of her German immigrant parents, who both preceded her in death. Also preceding her in death were her husband, Robert F. Holmes and daughter, Angela Holmes. Her brothers, John, Philip, and Benjamin Freudenberger and sisters, Freida Freudenberger and Elsie Krienke also predeceased her. Survivors include sisters, Iris F. Harmon, Guthrie and Margaret Flasch and her husband Otto, Coyle; sons and daughters-in-law, Charles and Christa Holmes, Springfield, Virginia, and William and Gayle Holmes, Edmond; daughter and son-in-law, Andrea and Tom Volturo, Oklahoma City; and three grandchildren, Andrew Homes, Julia Holmes and Jasmin Holmes. Helen graduated from Oklahoma A&M with honors in Journalism in 1936. After graduation, she became interim editor and later editor of the Maud Daily Enterprise. She then accepted a job at Oklahoma A&M in the Publications and Journalism Department, and was featured three times per week as host of a live radio broadcast on a Tulsa radio station. In 1940, Helen was graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a Master of Science in Agriculture Journalism as a University Scholar. After graduation, she returned to OKlahoma A&M to teach journalism. In July, 1942, she was selected for the First Officers Candidate Class of the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC), and was selected as the first WAAC from the State of Oklahoma. Civic activities locally and statewide following her retirement from the U.S. Army, included Guthrie City Council member and Mayor of Guthrie, Editor and principal author of the Logan County History, Logan County League of Democratic Women, Oklahoma Territorial Museum Docent, Lutheran Women’s Missionary League, Extension Homemakers, American Legion, Logan County Council on Aging, State FOLIO Board, YMCA, Guthrie Job Corps, Friends of the Guthrie Public Library, County 4-H and FAA leader. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Guthrie. Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 26, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Guthrie, with Rev. Vernon Betterman officiating. Interment will follow at Pleasant Valley Lutheran Church Cemetery, under the direction of Davis Funeral Home. The family requests that memorial contributions may be made to the Logan County Council on Aging, 215 Fairground Road; Friends of the Guthrie Public Library, 201 N. Division; the Oklahoma Territorial Museum, 406 E. Oklahoma; or Zion Lutheran Church, 424 E. Warner, all of Guthrie, Ok. 73044.
