American Legion Auxiliary

Service is Purpose of Auxiliary Order   (Okemah Daily Leader, March 3, 1935)

The American Legion Auxiliary, a service organization, was formed in Okemah April 26, 1926 at the First Bapist Church.

The 28 charter members were Mrs. Ed Ball, Laurine Turner Baldridge, Mrs. Key R. John, Mrs. E. O. Carr, Mrs. C. O. White, Mrs. J. V. Crawford, Mrs. O. D. Buck, Mrs. Dale S. Henry, Mrs. Francis J. Williams, Mrs. C. D. Carnett, Mrs. L. J. Spickard, Mrs. Roy Younts, Mrs. W. L. Martin, Joanna Patterson, Mrs. Omer O. Payne, Mrs. Louis Hill.

Mrs. Gordon Gray, Mrs. T. T. Waul, Mrs. W. M. Collier, Mrs. Owen Pettit, Mrs. Glenn Dill, Mrs. F. C. Dooley, Mrs. O. A. Shaw, Mrs. O. C. Gaston, Jr., Mrs. Frank P. Douglass, Mrs. C. T. Nutt, Mrs. Earle M. Kennedy, and Mrs. O. O. Wilson.

The purpose of the Auxiliary is aiding with the American Legion program and caring for ex-service men and their families and aiding widows and orphans.

In September, 1927, Mrs. Payne went as a national delegate from Oklahoma to Paris to attend the American Legion Auxiliary convention.

The Auxiliary aids in sponsoring all movement for the betterment of the community, state, and nation. One project of particular interest locally was the opening fo the sewing rooms before the FERA took charge. Some 2000 yards of cloth and other material and articles of clothing were given out by the Okemah chapter of the Auxiliary. Food also has been given destitute from time to time by the members.

At the present time, the Auxiliary is sponsoring a citizenship contest at the junior high school...
