Ewers "Sid", White Jr., longtime resident of Oklahoma City,
died August 2, 2000 in his home. Mr. White was born to
Ewers White , Sr. and
Myrtle B. White in McLoud, Oklahoma on June 29, 1915. He
attended the Oklahoma Military Academy in Claremore, OK. He
served in the U.S. Marine Corps. 1st Parachute Battalion from
1938 until 1946, defending his country in the South Pacific
front during World War II. He was a recipient of the
Presidential Unit Citation for service on Guadalcanal and Tulagi.
He participated in the first landing at Guadalcanal, and spent
28 months overseas. He was awarded the Purple Heart as a result
of action on Guadalcanal.
In 1944, he married LaRuth Bolin and they had two sons,
William Ewers and Steven Allen. After his honorable discharge
from the Marines, he settled in Oklahoma City, and worked for
Southwestern Bell Telephone Company as Staff Specialist in
charge of communications for all military bases in Oklahoma. He
retired from Southwestern Bell in 1981 after 35 years and will
be fondly remembered by his fellow coworkers.
Mr. White was preceded in death by his parents, Ewers and
Myrtle White and by two brothers, Gene White and Breckenridge
Glass. He is survived by his son, William E. White and his wife
Mary; son, Steven A. White ; grandchildren, Jeannie M. Pappas
and her husband, Andrew, James A. White , and Beth A. White ;
half brother, Dudley Glass and his son, Dudley Glass, Jr. and
family of Kentucky and his daughter, Barbara Jean Glass.
Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Mon., August 7, 2000 at
Smith & Kernke Chapel, 1401 N.W. 23rd. Interment to follow at
Fairlawn Cemetery
with a Marine Corps. Honor Guard. Smith & Kernke Funeral Home.
