Services for Beatrice Goyer Clodfelter, a longtime first-grade teacher in the Irving and Carrollton-Farmers Branch school districts, will be at 2 p.m. Monday at South MacArthur Church of Christ in Irving. Burial will be private.

Mrs. Clodfelter , 88, died Saturday at her daughter's Irving home, where she was staying.

Mrs. Clodfelter taught in Irving from the late 1950s to the early 1970s at Britain and Lee elementary schools. She then was recruited by the Carrollton-Farmers Branch school district for her success with reading instruction, said her daughter, Dr. Cherie Clodfelter .

In that district, she taught first at Stark Elementary, then at Blanton Elementary until she retired in the late 1980s.

"She never missed school," Dr. Clodfelter said. "She thought of teaching as a calling. " Mrs. Clodfelter came to Irving from Oklahoma with her husband, Clifford R. Clodfelter Sr. Mr. Clodfelter , a former Irving teacher and principal, died in 1988.

Mrs. Clodfelter began teaching in Oklahoma, where she also coached boys' basketball for a short time.

Her daughter, a professor at the University of Dallas in Irving, said she still lives by the advice her mother gave her when she decided to teach.

"She told me that you're responsible for one thing and one thing only. When the students leave you, they should want to know more.

You should whet their appetite," Dr. Clodfelter said. "That's what she did. She provoked her students to want to learn. " In addition to her daughter, Mrs. Clodfelter is survived by a son, Dr. Ron Clodfelter of Pagosa Springs, Colo.

Goyer, James W.
