The Choctaw County Genealogical Society is a non-profit organization dedicated to collecting, archiving, preserving and sharing genealogical and historical information about Choctaw County, Oklahoma.
The Choctaw County Genealogy Association DBA The Choctaw County Genealogical Society was organized May 1994. Meetings were held in Bacon Hall at Goodland until the new Choctaw County Library was opened in 2004. The Choctaw County Library's Heritage Room then became the new home for CCGS's Research Library from 2004 to present day.
While the Research Library remained available for researchers, the Society itself was on hiatus from 2009-2014 when it was reorganized. It was reorganized again in 2016.
CCGS is dedicated to genealogical research by providing a place to research, maintaining and preserving local records, volunteer assistance, quarterly newsletters and community projects.
We currently have three long-term community projects.
Veteran Project
Our Veteran Project is two-fold. First, we
are attemping to identify and honor all Choctaw County Veteran,
past or present, on our online Veteran Memorial. Second, we are
working with the Red River Valley Veterans Memorial in Paris,
Texas to identify Choctaw County Veterans that qualify for their
Ring of Honor and Wall of Honor.
Cemetery Project
Our Cemetery Project has many facets as
well. We are re-enumerating and photographing all Choctaw County
cemeteries and burials in an attempt to document and preserve the burial
information. We are displaying this information and photos on
our partner site, OKCHOCTA, as well as on Findagrave.com to aid
researchers who are unable to come and visit. New to the project
in 2016 are cemetery clean up workdays for those cemeteries that
are no longer maintained or where the current caretakers could
use some help.
Preservation of Choctaw County Information Project
Our
Preservation of Choctaw County Information Project was created
in 2016 with the new organization of the Society. This project
is dedicated to collecting and archiving Choctaw County
information and records that pose genealogical and/or historical
significance to Choctaw County and displaying that information
free online on our partner site, OKCHOCTA.
The newly revamped Society has been working diligently on these goals and others. To see what we've been up to, check out our Homepage and Events pages.
