Glenpool
In southwestern Tulsa County. Post office established January 31, 1908. Named for Ida E. Glenn, Creek [Indian], owner of the land on which the discovery well came in on December 1, 1905. George H. Shirk, Oklahoma Place Names (Norman, OK: University of Oklahoma Press, 1965). On November 22, 1905, wildcatters, Robert Galbreath and Frank Chesley discovered oil on the Ida Glenn Farm 7 miles southeast of Sapulpa, and lit the fuse for Sapulpa's explosive growth. Glenpool was the most important oil field in the world at the time. Maximum production reached more than 120,000 barrels a day. Pipelines carried its oil to the Great Lakes region and the Gulf of Mexico. Glenpool oil was a vital factor on the map, and for the first time made Oklahoma a major oil producing state.
