Query posted by Andreasen, Mindy on August 28, 1998 for , OLERICH, OLRICH, ULRICH

I am looking for my Grandmother's half-brothers, who lived in Vinita, Craig Co, OK. One brother, Ferdinand OLRICH born May 1, 1872 in Carver County, MN, owned a gas station in Vinita in the 1940's. The other two brothers were Robert, born 1866 in Prussia, and August, born 1869 in Prussia, also were reported to live in Vinita. Their parents were Paulina Banke and Ferdinand ULRICH. The brothers possibly changed their name to OLERICH or Olrich when they moved to OK. Any information on them or their descendants is welcome.

Searching for AKIN family.   10

Query posted by Crippen, Alyson on August 28, 1998 for AKIN

My great grandmother has a brother and a sister buried in the Fairview Cemetery in Vinita. They are Richard Leslie AKIN and Fern AKIN. I know their birth and deaths dates, even the location of their graves. Would there be a way to find out if any other Akins are buried in that cemetery? Maybe even a way to find out who owns or owned the plots they are buried on? Also, do you know if Vinita had a newspaper in the years 1900 to 1910? That is when my Akin family lived there. Sorry about so many questions. I searched for a genealogical society in Craig Co., but could not find one listed.

Looking for marriage records on William and Sarah NUTTER.   14

Query posted by Hunt, Roger D. on August 28, 1998 for , JONES, NUTTER, PHILLIPS

I have spent hundreds of hours over the last 14 years trying to find the location of the marriage of my reat-grandparents who married 16 March 1885, according to family records. Her parents lived in Cherokee County, KS at the time of the marriage and the young couple later lived near Joplin, MO. Checks of all the courthouse records for dozens of counties near these locations have turned up nothing. Finally tonight I got a breakthrough. I talked to a man in Burlington, IA who had a wooden box with a letter in it written by the groom, dated 14 March 1885, two days before the marriage. It was postmarked Vinita, I.T. It took some time with an atlas before I realized that this meant "Indian Territory". It now appears that they probably got married in the Indian Territory (near Vinita), which I was once told was something that a lot of couples did who lived in the bordering counties around Oklahoma. Is there any way that you know of to find a marriage record like this, before such records were kept in courthouses? If it helps, the couple who married were William H. NUTTER and Sarah E. JONES (maiden name PHILLIPS). Any suggestions that you may give me would help. I am going to Salt Lake City to the huge Family History Library there in about a month and could look up some of the Oklahoma Indian Archive Records if I had a good idea where to start for the Vinita area. Any ideas whatsoever?

Query posted by Logan, Tom on August 28, 1998 for , CROSSLAND, DAIL, HAN, HOWIE, JENKINS, LECHLIDER, TIGER, TROTT

I'm researching some of my ancestors who lived and died in Craig County. My great grandmother was born Mary Ellen TIGER abt. 1870. Her father was Mark TIGER and her mother was Mary Thompson STIDMAN (neeTROTT)who was born in 1831 in Habersham County,GA or AL. Mary Thompson TROTT was the daughter of Sarah (Sallie Adair) and Rev. James Jenkins TROTT. Mary Thompson TROTT went on to marry Thomas HOWIE after Mark TIGER died. She died as Mary HOWIE, sometime after 1906 in Vinita. I know very little about Mark TIGER except his parentage, brothers and sisters and that he assisted a missionary near Park Hill in the 1840s. I know he died within a year of the birth of Mary Ellen TIGER, who married a man named DAIL and then John HAN, who abandoned his two daughters, Mattie Jane and Dora. Mattie Jane was my grandmother and died in 1985 at the Cherokee Hospital in Claremore. My father is Thomas Mack CROSSLAND born in 1928 in Webbers Falls. My mother is Irene Mae LECHLIDER, born January 1928 in Vinita, daughter of Mattie Jane HAN and Lawrence Corbett LECHLIDER.

Looking for William C. CLIFTON with wife, Martha Frances HOUSE. they had two sons, Claude Presker (or Preston) and John William Clifton. I think I have Claude and John located in Craig Co., OK, from 1900 to 1909. John joined the Army in 1900 in Vinita, Craig Co. OK. There was a C Clifton and J W Clifton listed as Voters in Estella, Craig county for 1909 and 1910. I have census info for 1910 in Roosevelt Co. NM. where they had a homestead. They always stayed together as a family. The reason I think they lived in Craig Co. area was that Claude married Fee Wickliffe in 1904 in Warsaw MO. and took her to OK. Their first two children were born in OK. (not sure where), in 1906 and 1908 before going to NM. Claude was killed in NM. on 1/1/1913. His brother John married Fee and moved back to OK in the Big Cabin area. This is where my father, Claude Elmer Clifton, was born 0n 5/19/1916. John then joined Army again during WWI in Vinita, OK. Fee sold everything and moved to Warsaw, MO.
