RUPE Date: 3 Feb 2000 Hello. My name is Janet Rupe Batik, and I live in Louisville, Kentucky. Our line of Rupes goes back to Martin Rupe in the Shenandoah Valley in the late 1700's. He married Christina Zirkle, and both sets of parents were immigrants from Germany. In the 1890's my great grandfather, Jim Rupe and his brother, Dave, participated in the Olklahoma land rush. Great Uncle Dave stayed in Oklahoma where he passed away about 1955. I had the great pleasure to meet him on his ranch outside Tulsa. Is it possible that Opal Rupe might have been a daughter of Dave Rupe? If so, you and I may be related. My great granfather, Jim, was on the short side and sported a handle-bar mustache. He suffered from very high arches and his feet gave him grief. He and my great-grandmother were homesteaders in Kingman County, Kansas, when Jim and Dave went south to Oklahoma to sell the Kansas property. The story is that it was sold for two pinto ponies and a jug of whiskey (who knows!). While Dave stayed in Oklahoma, Jim and his wife, Elizabeth (Betty) Huff Rupe came back to Vine Grove, Kentucky, and they ended their days in Louisville. Their son, Clarence, married Nellie Ira Hillerich who was related to the Hillerichs of the Hillerich & Bradsby Bat Company, makers of the famous Louisville Slugger. My father, Murray, is the youngest child of Nellie and Clarence. Does any of this history sound familiar to you? Please let me know. While we got to meet great uncle Jim, he was living alone at the time so I have never met any other of the Oklahoma Rupes. I understand all his land was sold after his passing, and that it is now part of Tulsa. I hope to hear from you and that this information might in some way be helpful. Best wishes, Janet Rupe Batik Louisville, Kentucky NOTE: Reply to obituary for George W. WHITFORD
