I am trying to learn any details available on William HALLUM (son of William HALLUM and Mary MITCHELL) and his wife Mickey ENGLAND. I have a detail indicating Vinita, Oklahoma was either a last known address or their burial place. William was born in Chattahoochie, Georgia. I have no dates but suspect his birth to have been in the early 1800's or possibly late 1700's.

Thanks for your reply. The John Ballinger Family mentioned were from Grundy County, Missouri. They left there about 1915 and journeyed to New Mexico, then followed the wheat harvest north ending in Washington and Oregon. They settled in the Vinita/Afton area of Oklahoma for a short while, about 1917 or 1918, then moved to Kansas City, Missouri about 1919 or 1920. John Ballinger was a super salesman who mainly sold fruit trees for a company in Southern Missouri. My father, Glen Ballinger, married Imo Gene Dixon of Welch, OK in Kansas City. No one knows for sure, but we think they met in Oklahoma. Imo was the granddaughter of the Broyles family clan of Welch.

Mr. Bernett is buried in block nine at Fairview Cemetery, Vinita, OK. This is an old burial area, which is being used for new burials now. Some over-burials have likely occurred here. In the days when John was buried, this was a paupers section, for low or no cost burials. Much of this area was designated as a "colored" section. We did not find any listing of his death in the newspaper index books that we have, but I did not check the newspaper microfilms. Will keep my eyes and ears open for him when I do. {Also, are any of his kinfolks supposed to be in this area?}Lots of luck!

I had caught the name HOOLIE BELL on list. I have been rereading a booklet that was written by STELLA CARSELOWERY CROUCH I dont know what year it was written. It was given to me in 1973. title -Story of the Cherokee Indians. Lots of info about Vinita Craig Co.`On page 52 a portion of the paragraph. Our home was on SO Second St, on the So West corner of East Illinois & So Second St. where the Branstetter Grocery stands. we lived in the house just so of the store. The east side was considered the best part of town in its early days, and some of the most prominent familys lived there. On the corner east of us lived the family DR M.P.Haynes, across the street was the home of Oce Trott. SO. of that in the property known as the Griffin truck farm lived the HOOLIE BELLS, their granddaughter BELLE MADDOX lived with them. I thought that this might be a bit of family history you would enjoy knowing.

Looking for information on Sylvester Bertram "Bert" POWELL and his wife Henrietta Jane "Ettie" MANOR. The Powells took part in the 1893 land run, settling west of Enid until about 1915 when they removed to Vinita, Craig Co., OK where they both died in the mid 1950s. (I've seen MANOR spelled Mainer, Maner, and sundry other ways, so who knows which is correct.)

Afraid not. The cemetery office has only maps were are always accurate. The city did not start keeping burial records until late 1930's. They have basically nothing before 1936-37. The tombstone inscription book of the gen. soc. from which we obtained the previous information is the best source there is.
