If they had there own mortuary does that mean that they have their own cemetery? This relative was buried in the Haskell Cem in Muskogee so I am assuming that the hospital my of contracted out for out of the area cemeteries?

Yes, the hospital had its own cemetery. But it would a fair assumption if the body was buried somewhere else they would have used a funeral home...most of the hospital graves are not marked..

State Hospital 840

Query posted by Gillespie, James on October 09, 2006

Jon, I tried to get some info from another state hospital in New York and they just did not have much to share. Seem like the inmates are lost soles, no grave markers, no information, no help. The only reason I knew she was there she showed up on the county census. The state hospital in New York dumped the records also some years back.

Hi Angela, My grandfather was Asa Downing married to Eva (Landrum) Hubbard and lived in Coffeyville. After my grandmothers death, Asa moved to Independance and lived with a sister, I think her name was Judith. Daddy Asa is buried in Independance cemetary. He is Cherokee and is on the Dawes Freedman Roll with his family.

Have you ever looked at the site of "Find A Grave"? I did, for my "DeVine" family. You see, my Will DeVine was raised by Hugh Campbell. So I was trying to find Hugh Campbell in "Find A Grave", like I did my Will DeVine. Hugh didn't come up, but several other Campbell's did, and Louis sounds familar to me. Found Campbell's in Fairview Cemetery, Craig Co., OK. Also look at County sites, by going OK GenWeb Project, click on county, some have cemetery listings. I would check counties - Adair, Craig, Ottawa, several Campbell's throughout.

Sue, Hope this reply finds you & you are still interested in this family. I know very little about the Sammetinger's-they are not my ancestors. However, I have been looking for many years for information about Anna Mae's Indian heritage, which I believe comes from her mother Minnie Arnold Sammetinger & maternal grandmother Lydia "Lyddie" Atchley Arnold. I am connected to this family thru Lydia's sister Nancy "Nannie" Atchley Deason. I have a copy of an article from the Craig County History book about Ernest & Anna Mae if you don't have it. Have extensive research on Anna Mae's maternal side if you are interested.

I had a few minutes and did a quick search on RootsWeb to see what I could find on your grandmother. If you will put in the name Cora Stroud, I think you will find that several of your relatives have posted information on her and her family. Keep in mind that information on RootsWeb WorldConnect has been posted by individuals with varying degrees of experience and expertise in genealogical research so anything you find on RootsWeb needs to be verified. Some have her name as Cora Beatrice, some as Cora Belle, and one as Cora Bessan Stroud. According to the Social Security Death Index, she was born 1 Aug 1891. One researcher indicates she was born at Afton, OK and died 12 Mar 1984 in Melrose, Paulding Co., OH. Most have her parents as William Duval Stroud, born 5 Apr 1868 in Arkansas, and Addie Belle Cubbison. One submission indicates she was one of five children: Elmer, Cora, William F., Goldie, and Russell H. I see another submission has two more children for the family. Apparently Cora was married twice, first to Frank Larue Adams with whom she had three children: Charles William, Frankie Pansy, and James Russell. Then she married Amos Jacob Place with whom she had seven children: Amos Jacob Jr., Thomas, George, William, Richard, Brooks, and one more who may still be living. If you like, when I get a chance, I'll check the 1900 Indian Territory census and the 1910 Ottawa Co., OK census records for you.
