Why So Many Confederate
Veterans in Wynnewood, Oklahoma?
Oklahoma, with its rich, fertile
soil and undeveloped resources, was attractive to Southerners ruined by War and
Reconstruction. They came in droves, hoping to better their lot. Many of them
were Confederate veterans. Settled in 1887, Wynnewood, like most of the towns in
Indian Territory, was populated nearly exclusively by people from the Old South states,
and today the southeast quadrant of the state is still known as Little Dixie.
The Soldiers Must Not be Forgotten
They became the mayors, aldermen, ministers,
farmers, doctors, merchants, educators and citizens of the new state. But most of
all, they were the men and boys who arose to defend the South in her time of need.
James Tucker, who died here in 1904, enlisted in the Confederate Army at the tender age of
12 and was barely 15 when the War ended. When this permanent memorial is completed,
he will not be forgotten.
As you can see, we have verified the names
and military identifications of over 150 Confederate veterans who once lived in Wynnewood
or on the surrounding farms. They hail from every Southern state and the old Indian
Territory. When our ongoing research produces still others, a third bronze plaque
containing the names of those veterans will be added to the back side of the monument.
Construction
Patrick
"Red" Dennis, formerly stone carver at
the University of Oklahoma crafted the monument in Oklahoma limestone, a stone he could
work by hand. (Red is one of few American stone carvers who carve by
hand in the old traditional European style.) He explained that
Oklahoma limestone is quite durable and pointed out that the Empire State
Building is constructed of it, as is the Old City Hall in New Orleans,
built in the 1880s. Many of Oklahoma's courthouses are also
constructed of Oklahoma limestone.
Red Dennis with the monument
From various local sources (cemetery records, old
newspapers, etc.), we have compiled the following list of names of men who
might have been Confederate veterans in the Wynnewood area. We need
assistance in identifying these men as soldiers. If you know for sure that
any man on this list was a Confederate soldier, please let us know by
e-mailing the County Coordinator.
